Following a successful and brilliant first season of Shadow and Bone, the series established itself as an iconic fantasy series. This leads to the birth of an incredibly high expectation for the second season to not only deliver the same level of stellar storytelling but to surpass its established standards.
The second season kicks off smoothly following the already established plots, characters, and world-building from the first season. Alina (Jessiw Mei Li) is on the run with her best friend, Mal (Archic Renaux). As they try to escape foes from multiple sources, they are also on a mission to recover the other two amplifiers, in a bid to enhance Alina’s powers and destroy the fold.
On the other side of the world, the Crows return to a different Ketterdam — a place where they are now fugitives, and Pekka Rollins (Dean Lennox Kelly) is the new boss. The second major storyline kicks off here as the team with the help of recruits Nina Zenik (Danielle Galligan) and Wylan Hendricks (Jack Wolfe), embarks on a mission to clear their names and get back their lost empire.
Showrunner and Creator, Eric Heisserer is not a novice at weaving multiple storylines into a big climatic ending, and he does it again brilliantly this season. This season takes on a lot more than the first season, with new characters, new locations, and more complicated character interactions. While it mostly succeeds in this venture, some plots are underexplored leaving for nearly zero progress in those departments.
The cast delivers a brilliant performance that alleviates their characters’ moments and journeys. Their chemistry is another strong suit that helps in delivering a convincing relationship between the various characters. The love story arc of the season also shines.
Shadow and Bones delivers another epic season that amps the brilliance of the first season while simultaneously solidifying itself as a fantasy series in a league of its own.
