Shane Lunny was the son of Sinead O’Connor, an Irish activist, singer, and songwriter. Shane was born on March 10, 2004, to the artist and Donal Lunny, an Irish musician whom she dated for a while. Shane had a lot of troubles and had tried suicide on several occasions. As such, his parents admitted him to a hospital to be on suicide watch, but he unfortunately disappeared from the health facility and was found dead a few days later as a result of suicide.

Shane’s mother was saddened by her son’s death and blamed the facility, claiming that they were clumsy and should have done a better job with her son.

Death

Shane had a troublesome life, and he had suicidal ideations; upon noting this, his parents checked him into a hospital in Dublin so that he could be on suicide watch. Shane had been staying in the hospital, but he disappeared in January 2022. After being informed of this, Sinead was utterly disappointed, and she was not happy with the hospital.

A few days later, Shane’s body was found in the suburbs of Dublin. The young celebrity child had died of suicide. On hearing this information, Sinead was heartbroken; she loved him and considered him the love of her life. She was not okay, and she shared several tweets that suggested that she would take her own life.

Shane was only 17 years old at the time of his death. His mother blamed Tallaght Hospital for her son’s death, given that they were supposed to watch him, and they had failed in one she had entrusted them to do.

His Mother’s Reaction to His Death

Shane Lunny’s death broke his mother. She shared several tweets that suggested she wanted to commit suicide. Sinead noted that there was no reason for her to continue living without her son. After sharing the troubling tweets suggesting taking her own life, Sinead later tweeted, noting that she had checked herself into the hospital accompanied by police officers.

Sinead noted that she hated herself for losing her son and she was going to find him. She further noted that checking into the hospital was only delaying the inevitable.

His Mother

Shane’s mother had her fair share of mental health struggles. She had also tried to commit on several occasions. For instance, there was a year she had eight suicide attempts. This happened after she had undergone a radical hysterectomy. She noted, “I was flung into surgical menopause.” After the procedure, she was discharged on Tylenol, no hormone replacement, and her hormones were everywhere. She was mental, but she found her way out of it.

Sinead may have had her fair share of struggles, but she loved her son. She noted that Shane was “mommy’s boy” and as such, they were really close, and losing him did a number on her. She even made a song dedicated to her son.

After the death of her son, Sinead did not live for long. She died in July 2023 as a result of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was 56 years old at the time of her death.
